LIMESTONE FALLS TO LEES-MCRAE AT NCAA REGIONAL

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.—The Limestone College men’s tennis team lost to Lees-McRae, 5-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Thursday afternoon. Limestone’s season ends with an 11-7 record. This was Limestone’s first appearance in the NCAA tennis tournament.
Limestone trailed the Bobcats 1-0 after losing at the No. 2 doubles flight, but the Saints took a 2-1 lead after their No. 3 doubles team, Paulo Avila (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Miguel Lopez Zuniga (Guanajuato, Mexico), got an 8-5 win over Tyler Grove and Alek Mojski. Limestone’s Thomas Ollivier (Caen, France) and Phillippe Hogan (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) battled for an 8-6 win over Nandor Solymosi and Steve Karendal at the No. 1 slot.
Despite holding the 2-1 lead heading into the singles competition, Limestone struggled and dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 flights. Henrik Nordquist (Danderyd, Stockholm, Sweden) got the Saints’ only win at No. 4 as he beat Travis VanHoy in two sets, 7-6, 6-2. Zuniga battled his opponent to three sets while playing with an injury. Christian Warnholtz (Queretaro, Mexico) also forced his opponent to three sets after dropping the first.
Lees-McRae advances to play tournament-host Georgia College and State University tomorrow.
