The Limestone College men’s and women’s tennis teams competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Tournament last weekend in Sumter, S.C. The Southeast is one of the toughest regions in NCAA Division II and is home to the defending men’s and women’s national championship teams from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Limestone’s Miguel Lopez Zuniga (Guanajuato, Mexico) had one of the Saints’ strongest performances at the tournament as he advanced to the quarterfinals of the “A” singles flight.
Lopez Zuniga’s quarterfinals appearance is the first time in Limestone history that a player has advanced so far at the ITA regional. He started his run with a two-set win over USC-Aiken’s Nathan Berlyn in the round of 64 (6-3, 6-3). He went on to beat the #15-seeded Phillip Lawson of Pfeiffer (4-6, 6-4, 6-1). Lopez Zuniga also defeated the tournament’s #6 seed, Christian Lee-Daigle of Queens, in the round of 16 in two sets (6-3, 6-3), before he lost to Armstrong Atlantic State’s #4-seeded Mikk Irdoja (6-3, 6-2).
Other notable accomplishments from the weekend include Eve Aubry winning in the first round of the women’s “A” flight singles. Lauren Bolender (North Canton, Ohio) and Joyce Juventin won one round in the main draw of the “B” doubles flight. Aubry and doubles partner Jimena Munoz Quiroga (La Candelaria, Coyoacan, Mexico) won one round in the “A” flight doubles draw. Juventin also reached the finals of the “B” draw singles consolation draw.
Limestone will take a break until February when the Saints and Lady Saints open their season on February 13 at USC-Aiken in Aiken, S.C.
