Mars Hill, NC – Men's basketball dropped their South Atlantic Conference opener against Mars Hill 75-61. Limestone falls to a record of (3-2, SAC 0-1), and Mars Hill improves to (3-0, SAC 1-0).
STORY OF THE GAME:
First Half:
- Limestone led for the first part of the few minutes of the game 4-5.
- Trevon Payton stole the ball and made a transition layup keeping the Saints ahead 7-8.
- Isayah Owens hit a layup of his own keeping his team ahead 7-10.
- Mars Hill tied it up by a three-pointer from Jace Williams.
- The Lions kept rolling through the quarter hitting a three and extending their lead to ten as the score was now 23-13.
- Owens was on the attack in the first half hitting a three-pointer as he was assisted by Greg McKay bringing the score to 23-16.
- Mars Hill hit a mid-range jumper extending their lead to 11 as the score was now 28-17.
- Sirr Hughes hit two threes at the end of the quarter cutting into the lead to six making the score 29-26.
- McKay hit two free throws at the end of the quarter as the lead was now six however the Lions hit a jumper and ended the quarter 36-28.
Second Half:
- Carlin Gelin started off the second half with a layup as the team was only down by 6.
- McKay made a basket for the Saints as the lead was only four at the start of the second half.
- Mars Hill went on to make a few unanswered points and opened up their lead to 11 as the score was now 49-38.
- Owens made a strong move to the basket making the score 62-53.
- The Saints battled back but only managed to cut the lead to seven as Trevon Payton made a layup and the score was now 68-61.
- The Lions closed the game out with a three-pointer as the final score was 75-61.
Key Players:
- Hughes was the top performer for Limestone, scoring 20 points with 5 three-pointers.
- Owens and Greg McKay also contributed significantly with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
- McKay was strong on the boards with 8 rebounds.
