Boxscore Jefferson City, TN. – Limestone's men's basketball almost upset the Eagles on the road in a South Atlantic Conference game with the final coming out to (98-89). Limestone falls to a record of (3-6, SAC 0-5) as Carson-Newman moves to a record of (9-3, SAC 5-2).
Key Players:
- Sirr Hughes (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) was the standout performer, scoring an impressive 29 points. Hughes demonstrated his scoring ability by shooting 10-18 from the field and 7-9 from the free-throw line.Â
- Trevon Payton (Lilburn, Ga.) also had a remarkable game, scoring 28 points with an efficient 10-13 shooting, including 4-7 from beyond the arc.Â
- Greg Mckay (Nassau, Bahamas) contributed significantly with 11 points and led the team in rebounds with 8.Â
- Isayah Owens (Inman, S.C. ) added 7 points and was a strong presence on the defensive end with 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
STORY OF THE GAME:
First Half:
- Carson-Newman went up by three to start the game with Braden Ilic hitting a three on transition.
- Carlin Gelin (Melbourne, FL.) made a second chance layup cutting into their lead 9-5.
- Sirr Hughes made a layup and the free throw after he was fouled on the play cutting into the lead 11-8.
- John Zhao hit a driving layup putting his team up 18-11.
- Yaturi Bolton (Goose Creek, S.C.) was able to get through defenders and hit the layup.
- Both teams went back and forth with less than five minutes to go with Carson-Newman going on a run and as they went up by 12.
- Limestone battled back with Mckay hitting two free throws to bring the lead to nine as the score was now 48-39 at the half.
Second Half:
- The Eagles went up by 13 to start the half with two quick baskets going up 52-39.
- The Saints went on a run as they brought the lead down to six with a few baskets coming from a strong defensive strategy.
- Carson-Newman jumped back up by nine with Nick Brenegan hitting a three. However, Mckay came back down the court making a strong layup with contact bringing the score to 57-50.
- Payton made a three-pointer on transition cutting into the Eagles lead 64-59.
- Jack Browder was about to bring Carson-Newman's lead back to 13 with a layup bringing the score to 86-73.
- The Saints grind through the end of the game, bringing the lead from 11 to 5 after a few made baskets.
- Hughes made a three-pointer with 40 seconds on the clock bringing the score to 94-89. Â
- Carson-Newman ended the game with two free throws bringing the final score to 98-89.
