Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Stefan Roeb

Saints have their win streak upended in Anderson

Anderson, S.C. — The Limestone University Women's Basketball team had to cap of its previous win streak at 6, due to a 70-61 loss at Anderson. Limestone came out firing in the 1st quarter, taking a decisive lead, but Anderson mounted a quick first half comeback and solidified their victory late. With this win, the Saints fall to 12-9 (8-9 SAC), while the Trojans improve to 14-9 (10-7 SAC).

Key Players:

  • Kalisha Hill (Saluda, S.C.) was limited by fouls today, but still managed to account for 17 points, 8 Rebounds and 5 Steals.

  • Reagan Kargo (Summerfield, N.C.) continued her solid play, playing yet another full 40 and going 6-10 from the field, 3-5 from distance to amass 15 points and 5 Rebounds.

  • Graycie Poe (Bicknell, In.) chipped in 9 points and a very respectable 6 Rebounds and 4 Assists

STORY OF THE GAME:

First Quarter:

  • Coming off a hard-fought victory in Newberry, on the first stint of this week-long road campaign, Limestone wasted no time to get going once more.

  • While Anderson was first on the board, it was Hill that got the Saints going, scoring 7 of the first 9 points before the first media.

  • The Lady Saints continued their onslaught for the rest of the quarter. Megan Watson (Tampa, Fla.), Madison Clark (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Amara Newsom (Kennesaw, Ga.) buckets were complimented by a Kargo deep-ball and a Poe layup to boost the Saints lead to 20-7, while forcing a Timeout by Anderson with 01:38 to go in the first.

  • Anderson would trim the lead to 20-10 by the end of the quarter but Coach Corey Fox's team looked very comfortable in their drop-back defense going into the 2nd period.

Second Quarter:

  • Dior Shelton (Bluffton, S.C.) drained a triple early in the 2nd but the Trojans started slowly but surely chipping away from the Saints lead.

  • A phase of slower decision-making as well as some costly Turnovers for Limestone, gave Anderson the opportunity to make a 10-point run and take over the lead of the contest for the first time, 28-27 with 02:18 to go in the half.

  • Clark took the lead back with a beautiful reverse layup, but a rare Anderson 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer send the Saints into the break trailing 31-33.

Third Quarter:

  • The 3rd quarter would be a back-and-forth affair as no team managed to pull away by more than 5 points at any time.

  • The last lead for Limestone occurred at the 06:10 mark, as Kargo connected on one of her Jump Shots from the paint.

  • Anderson started to rely in their scoring on mid-range jump shots which started falling more and more for the Trojans as well as an array of Free Throws.

  • Kalisha Hill, beat the buzzer with 1 second to go, cutting the Trojans lead to 51-48 before the last intermission and giving the Saints all to play for in the last period.

Fourth Quarter:

  • That hope was quickly extinguished however, as Anderson's Diamond McDowell connected on two consecutive 3-point shots. McDowell would finish the night with two Double-Doubles, contributing 22 Rebounds and 23 Points.

  • Limestone was not ready to give up though, with Newsom and Poe connecting on 2 Free Throws each and Kargo draining a Fastbreak shot from distance in between, to cut the lead to 4 again.

  • That, unfortunately, marked the last time, Limestone felt in distance, as they could only account for 6 more points throughout the 2nd half of the quarter, both coming from 3's at the hands of Kargo and Watson

  • Anderson on the other hand quickly pushed the lead back out to twelve and forced miss after miss, while making a couple of timely plays to keep any last efforts in check. Kargo's 3 capped of the game at 61-70.

Up Next:

Limestone will end its week-long road quest with a long trip to Wise, Va., on Saturday Feb. 8th, where they will face the Highland Cavaliers of The University of Virginia at Wise. The Saints will look to revenge a loss from early January, in a critical matchup with playoff implications. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
