Becka Owens

Limestone University and the Athletics Department officially announced the hire of Becka Owens as Assistant Athletic Trainer. in August 2020. Owens serves as a trainer for the football program, as well as the men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis programs.

A 2016 graduate of Carthage College, Owens was first hired as a graduate assistant at Utah State University where she received her master's degree in Health and Human Movement with an emphasis in Sports Medicine. During her time at USU, she provided coverage to the school's Division I football program, and served as the primary athletic trainer to the women's tennis team, a position in which she coordinated with coaches and provided timely injury updates and changes in participation status.

As a member of the sports medicine team, Owens was able to garner valuable experience assisting in event coverage for other USU DI programs such as men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, gymnastics, softball, and cross country. During that period, she closely collaborated with the strength and conditioning staff in creating programs to help athletes return to participation following an injury, and traveled with teams to their events, including with the football program to Tucson, Ariz. to take part in the 2017 Arizona Bowl.

Most recently, Owens returned to Kenosha, Wisc. where she was contracted as a staff athletic trainer at her alma mater, Carthage College. Employed by Froedtert South, Inc., she served as primary athletic trainer for a handful of programs, including women's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's water polo and women's lacrosse. She also traveled with and acted as the only certified athletic trainer for junior varsity football games.

While working at Carthage College, Owens also assisted the institution's athletic training staff in the accurate assessments of acute and chronic injuries for student-athletes of all 24 sports. To ensure effective follow-up treatment, she collaborated with team physicians, physical therapists, and other members of the sports medicine team for proper referral, rehabilitation and return-to-play decision making.

During her time as an undergraduate student at Carthage College, Owens was employed by the Medical College of Wisconsin to construct a concussion research study with the college's football, soccer, and lacrosse teams. As an assistant to Dr. Michael McCrea, she and a team of researchers established an in-helmet sensor system with the football team to measure forces sustained during football-related activity. Owens oversaw all on-site concussion testing, a unique opportunity that allowed her the chance to become familiar with computerized testing while receiving valuable hands-on experience.

Owens became certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification in June 2016 and became Graston M1 Certified in April 2019. She has been a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association, and the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers' Association since 2013.
