Early Life and High School Career

Leon Washington was born on August 29, 1982, in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Andrew Jackson High School, where he excelled as an all-around athlete. During his senior year, Washington rushed for an impressive 2,437 yards and scored 28 touchdowns. His versatility was evident as he also returned three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns, and defensively, he recorded 88 tackles and three interceptions. His outstanding performance earned him the title of "Mr. Florida" in football in 2002, along with numerous other accolades.

College Career at Florida State University

Washington continued his football journey at Florida State University, where he played for the Seminoles from 2002 to 2005. Initially recruited as a cornerback, he transitioned to running back during his freshman year. Throughout his college career, Washington showcased his versatility and talent, becoming the first true freshman at FSU to record a 100-yard rushing game since 1997. He was named ACC Specialist of the Week twice and played a crucial role in the Seminoles' success, including leading the team in rushing during the Sugar Bowl.

In his senior year, Washington became the only player in the Bobby Bowden era to score touchdowns in five different ways—by run, reception, punt return, kickoff return, and fumble recovery. He finished his college career with 2,041 rushing yards, ranking him 10th in FSU history.

Professional Playing Career

Washington was selected by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played for the Jets, Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, and Tennessee Titans during his NFL career. Known for his exceptional skills as a return specialist, Washington set multiple kick return records and earned two Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro honors.

Coaching Career

After retiring from professional football, Washington transitioned into coaching. He began his coaching career with the Detroit Lions as a WCF minority coaching assistantship/offense and special teams coach in 2019. He then joined the New York Jets as a special teams assistant coach in 2021, where he served until 2023.
